Demontowne

Demontowne Logo

Demontowne is the world that follows demon hunter Faral and her adventures in a fantasy, steampunk, horror, western.

Demontowne is a melting pot of influences including comic stories like Marvel’s run of Red Sonja, Savage Sword of Conan, and Heavy Metal in the 70s and 80s (like Taarna, Den, Ranxerox), along with a love of Hellboy, manga, the Wild Wild West series, ancient mythology and modern paranormal tales.

The History of Demontowne

Dirk Hooper created Faral and the Demontowne world in 1993 to collaborate with fellow Rain King Studios member Robert Henry. After Dirk presented a list of story options to Robert, he was most interested in penciling a story about a “demon hunter in the old west.” The horror element and female protagonist played well with Robert’s art style.

Dirk created the first drawing of Faral based on the influences of sword and sorcery comics, Heavy Metal heroines, and Clint Eastwood westerns (her original hat was styled after his).

Even with the redesign, the character’s original look (curvy statuesque woman, cowboy hat, red hair, mechanical hand, eyepatch, sword, and pistol) is still evident.

The original 8-page story ran in Rough Cut issue 2 in 1994. (You can see one of the pages to the right!) Robert Henry rendered the pencils and Dirk did the inks and wrote the story. We were happy with the reception we received at comics shops and conventions as we got that issue out there. People wanted more!

Shortly after, Dirk wrote four more short stories for the newly-formed Rain King Studios gang to do a full-size anthology comic on the character. Robert Henry did a fantastic penciling job on his story back in the 90s, and, nearly 30 years later, that story will be inked, colored, and presented to you soon! The other stories are still planned to be produced as well.

In the late 90s, Hooper ran a role-playing game set in the world of Demontowne that further fleshed out the world and built up even more characters and situations.

Since the early 2000s Hooper has been working on Faral’s full origin story, which was to be written as a novel, and penned an adults-only story in 2010 featuring Faral that was meant for a book anthology (but never published).

The origin story, which has been percolating for 30 years, will now be the fuel for a new comic series!
